Gone are the days when it was assumed that kids and cavities went together like cake and ice cream (a combination that’s likely caused its share of cavities)! Today, it’s recognized that good oral hygiene starts at an early age. That’s why Boerne dentist Dr. Luigi Massa recommends that children come in for a first dental visit around age 3. He’ll assess dental development, help kids become accustomed to regular dental visits, and give you tips on how to keep children’s teeth healthy.
At our Boerne dental office, Dr. Massa offers two of the most effective cavity fighters available – dental sealants and fluoride treatments. These preventive dental therapies provide an easy and economical way to maintain strong, happy smiles.
As the name implies, a sealant essentially “seals” a tooth. A light plastic coating applied to bumpy back teeth smoothes them for easier cleaning and provides an added layer of protection against cavity-causing bacteria. Sealants are simply painted on baby and/or permanent teeth. The process to apply sealants is completely comfortable. Once sealants are in place, kids aren’t aware of them.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay. Lots of kids today drink bottled water, so they may be at risk of not getting the fluoride they need for strong, healthy teeth. A professionally applied fluoride treatment remineralizes soft spots in teeth and hardens enamel to create a barrier against decay.
